Most manufacturers of earthmover/OTR tyres use the above industry codes in
their literature. These identify the tyre's type of service, tread pattern and depth.

E coded tyres are designed for truck and scraper use at maximum speeds of 48kph.
L coded tyres are for loader and dozer applications at maximum speeds of 8kph.
These speed limitations are to prevent excessive heat build-up.
E1, L1, E2, L2, E3 and L3 tyres have different treads and applications but the
tread depth is generally the same. The E4 and L4 have 50% more depth
than the 1,2 and 3 series. The E5 and L5 have 250% more tread depth. The E7
is a special tyre for haul trucks in soft ground and fine sand conditions.

Michelin has developed its own rating system and does not include
industry codes on its sidewalls; but a maximum ply rating and star marking system.
Other companies are adopting the same system.
